⎯ A CHART OF THE WHISKEY ROUTE · ANNO 1790

Being a true map of the 1,500-mile voyage that carried Kentucky bourbon to the world.

In 1790, Jacob Spears distilled whiskey on the Kentucky frontier and sent it southward by flatboat through the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to the port of New Orleans. He is said to be the first distiller to label his product as “bourbon,” effectively coining the term.

Jacob Spears Portrait

Before Kentucky was known around the world for bourbon, Jacob Spears was making whiskey on the frontier. His sons Abraham and Noah loaded oak barrels onto wooden flatboats and pushed into the current—bound for the Ohio, the Mississippi, and the markets of New Orleans.

Noah is said to have made the voyage thirteen times, returning on foot through the wilderness of the Natchez Trace.
